What does journalism have to do with science, technology, engineering and math or “STEM”? As Kate quickly learned, quite a bit. She was asked to speak to an after-school STEM club at an elementary school in Niles, Michigan in March about how news reporters and anchors depend on technology. She answered questions from anxious kindergarten students all the way to 4th grade. Dealing with 90 plus students is no easy task, but Kate enjoyed breaking down the basics of news and working on a microphone craft as well as mock interviews with kids. She’s already been asked to return in the summer.
